Berwick-upon-tweed, is the northern most town in England, located at the mouth of the River Tweed in Northumberland, close to the Scottish Border. It is a traditional coastal market town. Berwick Castle was constructed in the 13th century, by the 17th century it was in disrepair and much of it was demolished to make way for the railway in the 1800’s. Substantial ruins remain, including a large part of the rampart walls.

Berwick-upon-tweed railway station, just north of the Royal Border Bridge. The station is on the East Coast Mainline, between Edinburgh, Newcastle and London. The first station was constructed by the North British Railway Company in 1846. The Newcastle & Berwick Railway reached the River Tweed in 1847 but could not reach the town until a temporary viaduct was completed 18 months later. This viaduct was replaced in 1850 by the current Royal Border Bridge. This viaduct was designed by Robert Stephenson. The station was later rebuilt in 1927 by the LNER.

The painter J. S. Lowery, produced a number of paintings of Berwick in the 1930’s. Berwick Barracks, sometimes known as Ravensdowne Barracks, construction was started in 1771 and was home to the British Army. After the Army moved out, maintaining the barracks and it’s history as a visitor attraction was taken over by English Heritage.
