Hexham is a village town in Northumberland, on the banks of the River Tyne and close to the Roman fort of Vindolanda on Hadrian’s Wall. It is close to the market town of Hexham and is known for it’s vibrant independent shops and boutiques. Corbridge or Coria as it was first known was the most northerly town in the Roman Empire. The Romans constructed the first fort in AD 85, the remains of the site are managed by English Heritage, with a museum on the site.
Corbridge railway station, constructed by the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway Company was opened in 1835. The Newcastle and Carlisle Railway was later absorbed by the North Eastern Railway, then the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923. British Railways took over after the end of the second world war. The original stone station buildings on the eastbound platform remain as a private residence, with a new waiting facilities and a modern footbridge constructed in 2013. In 2019 the platforms were extended to accommodate new, longer trains.
Corbridge station is a popular destination for walkers heading to Hadrian’s Wall, although the railway follows the River Tyne, only a couple of station stops allow easy access to the Wall along the way.
