Durham Cathedral Art Coasters. Set of 4 Durham ‘Splash’ wood coasters. Each coaster features a different watercolour painted picture of Durham Cathedral and the Durham City Skyline. These watercolour paintings are by local artist Louisa E. Taylor and are part of her ‘Splash’ range of Durham and Newcastle paintings.

Durham City Blue, watercolour painting with Durham Cathedral, the Castle and then St. Nicholas Church spire, forming the skyline. These are the main building elements in this watercolour painting by local North East artist Louisa E. Taylor. This Durham skyline, watercolour painting has mostly blue tones, with oranges and pinks. The buildings in this painting are mostly a solid blue colour. With patches of lighter blue in some of the buildings and then different shades of blue paint has been used for the ‘splash’, The right hand side of the painting has the most ‘splash’ in the buildings. The watercolour paint used on the buildings has been diluted at the bottom, this gives a softer spread to the paint, while the outline of the buildings are nice and crisp. The splash in the sky is mostly blue and purple. The bottom part of the painting gets warmer colours added, including oranges and reds

Durham Impression painting, uses more soft pastel tones, they are more pink, yellow and orange. With the odd splash of blue and green mixed in, to provide some contrast. In this watercolour painting, Louisa’s technique has been to use more watercolour wash on the base of the painting and not so much ‘Splash’. Where she has, this has been confined mostly to the centre of the painting. The sky is similar, it is mostly a light, pale watercolour wash, with just a couple of darker splashes of paint to add interest. While this is a softer painting, Durham Cathedral is quite bold and is well defined. The Cathedral is very large in this painting, with only part of Durham Castle showing on the left hand side of the picture.

Durham Cathedral Setting Sun. This colourful and striking painting of Durham features bold, bright and punchy magentas, yellows and oranges. The inclusion of the sun and the light watercolour wash, used on the sky help to soften this painting. This piece of artwork is in contrast to some of her other work which is sometimes softer in colour tones. The body both Durham Cathedral and the Castle are painted in bold, dark, solid colours. The watercolour paint wash then flows down towards the base of the painting from the buildings. The ‘Splash’ effect starts in this paint wash, then continues down to the bottom of the picture. The sky is painted with a watercolour wash, the setting sun is to the right, above Durham Castle. There is just a hint of ‘Splash’ in the sky.

Durham Cathedral Purple Rain, watercolour painting has mostly purple and blue tones. The yellow sun adds a bright warmth to this painting. With the warmer yellows and oranges in the sky, contrasting with cooler purples and blues of the buildings below. The buildings of the Durham skyline are painted with solid blocks of colours, in blues, greens and purples. The ‘Splash’ effect flows down from the body of the buildings, to the bottom of the painting and into the corners. The sky is painted with a pale watercolour colour wash. There is just a hint of ‘Splash’ paint in the sky. The large setting sun is above and to the right side of Durham Cathedral, just before Durham Castle and the city rooftops.

The size of the Durham Cathedral Art Coasters are 90x90mm and come in a gift pack. They have a glossy finish and are very easy to clean.
