Durham Cathedral Rose Window Greeting Card. Square greeting card, with a closeup photograph of the Rose Window. The Rose Window is the focal point of the cathedral and is located in the chapel of the nine altars. The window depicts Christ in Majesty in the centre, surrounded by the 12 Apostles, who form the first ring. The second ring, around the apostles, depicts the 24 elders from the Book of Revelations.. The current window dates from the late 19th century. The original glasses date back from the 15th-century, but they were replaced during the 19th-century. This is the hardest stained glass window in the cathedral to photograph. This is because a series of wires hang in front of the window supporting the Tester, hanging above St. Cuthbert’s tomb. These wires had to be removed in Photoshop before the photograph was fit to be printed. This was a time consuming but worthwhile job. The finished result is fantastic.

Work to construct this fabulous Norman building, began in 1093 and took about 800 years to complete. It is the shrine and resting place for the remains of St. Cuthbert. The monks of Lindisfarne had spent many years travelling around the North East of England looking for a suitable resting place for this important saint. Durham Cathedral and the buildings around palace Green, including Durham Castle in 1986 were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Durham Cathedral has featured in many films and TV shows, including the early Harry Potter movies, Elizabeth and Marvel’s Avengers Endgame. TV shows include ITV’s North East set detective series Inspector George Gentley.
