Greeting Card Sycamore Gap Splash. An A5 Greeting card, abstract watercolour painting of the Sycamore Gap tree, on Hadrian’s Hall in Northumberland. The Sycamore Gap tree was one of the most photographed in the country before it was felled in October 2023. The tree stood in a dramatic dip in Hadrian’s Wall in the Northumberland National Park, and in late 2016, it took the crown for English ‘Tree of the Year’ in the Woodland Trust’s awards. This watercolour painting by local, north east artist Louisa E. Taylor, is part of her ‘Splash of Toon’ range of painting, depicting iconic North East landmarks and views.

Red, yellow and green are the prominent colours in this abstract painting. The lone figure at the base of the tree, really gives the viewer a sense of scale of the size of the tree. The sky has more of a watercolour wash, than her usual Splash. The base of the painting has different bands of colour running through it. This painting of Sycamore Gap tree, is quite unique in Louisa’s ‘Splash of Toon’ range of paintings as it only includes one landmark from the North East and is not a montage.

This colourful and striking painting of Sycamore Gap features bold, bright and punchy magentas, yellows and oranges. The sky has a light watercolour wash, used to help to soften this painting. This piece of artwork is in contrast to some of her other work which is sometimes softer in colour tones.
