The traffic and figures on the quayside footpath and road give this photograph a real sense of life and movement. A high tide and still conditions on the River Tyne produce a very clear reflection of the bridges in the water. Including the walkway and railing helps takes the viewers eyes through this photograph, from front to back, taking you through to Tyne Bridge and the High Level Bridge and Swing Bridge below.
The bridge was designed by the engineering firm of Mott, Hay and Anderson They also designed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland. Tyne Bridge is based on their design for the Sydney harbour Bridge. Construction on the bridge started in 1925 and opened in 1928. Tyne Bridge has become the defining symbol of Tyneside.
