Description

Snow Globe St Marys Lighthouse. This snow globe has two different photographs inside. On one side is a photograph of the lighthouse at Whitley Bay. Located on St. Maryโ€™s Island, this photograph shows the lighthouse reflected in the approach causeway to the island as the tide is starting to submerge it. The clouds behind the lighthouse have lovely evening colours from the setting sun, these are reflected in the water surrounding the island. Including the causeway to the lighthouse, provides the viewer a lead-through into the main part of the photograph, which is the lighthouse and its reflection. The viewer can then explore the lovely colours and clouds in the sky and then the reflections of the sky in the water surrounding the lighthouse. This photograph was taken with a Lee Filters, 3 stop filter, this was used to increase the length of exposure. This helps to soften the water and improve the reflection of the Lighthouse in the water coming in over the causeway. The filter also gives some movement to the clouds in the sky.

On the other side is aย daytime photograph of the Spanish City at Whitley Bay. The iconic โ€˜Domeโ€™, completed in 1910, has undergone a major renovation and is now home to some fantastic restaurants, venues, cafeโ€™s and shops, all right beside the coast and just a short walk from St. Maryโ€™s Lighthouse on the North East coast. This daytime photograph of the building was taken, looking towards the front of the building, through the gardens area located, towards the new shops, cafes and fish and chip restaurant are located.

The building originally opened asย The Spanish City and Whitley Bay Pleasure Gardens. It openedย as a concert hall, restaurant, roof garden and tearoom. A ballroom was added in 1920 and later a permanent funfair.ย In 1909 the Whitley Pleasure Gardens Company Ltd. was formed and established a large fairground. The funfair was extremely popular, with fairground rides and amusements, including a โ€œcorkscrewโ€ roller coaster. This was later moved to Flamingoland in North Yorkshire back in 1983. The pleasure gardens had fallen into disrepair and were closed in 1999 and the demolition of the fairground was announced. In 2011 the first regeneration plan was announced for the Spanish City building. After a few false starts, plans were given the go ahead in 2013 and the project was completed and the renovated building was opened in 2018. Inside from the top floor of the building, there are fantastic views out to sea and along the coastline including seeing St. Maryโ€™s Lighthouse and down towards Cullercoats.

Snow Globe St Marys Lighthouse, comes in a white gift box with a gift tag included. The snow globe is plastic with a silver base and has lots of snow inside. They are posted in a strong cardboard mailing box for protection. They make a stunning all year round gift but are most popular for Christmas presents.
