Wallsend, located on the River Tyne derives its name from its location at the eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall.The remains of the Roman Fort of Segedunum is located at Wallsend. Hikers of Hadrian’s Wall either begin or finish here.

Wallsend has a long history of coal mining and was a major location of ship building on the River Tyne and was the home of Swan Hunter shipyards.

Wallsend Metro station is situated on the site of the former Wallsend station, which opened in 1839, under the Newcastle and North Shields Railway. This later became part of the North Tyneside Loop, served by the North Eastern Railway. Following closure for conversion in the early 1980s, the station was demolished and re-built for the opening of the Tyne and Wear Metro.
