Durham Cathedral Millennium Window Greeting Card. A5 greeting card, with a photograph of the Millennium Window. This modern window in Durham Cathedral was completed in 1995, it is located in the South Quire aisle to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of St Cuthbert’s Shrine arriving at Durham. The stained glass window combines Holy Island and St Cuthbert with the modern world. For example a university computer is shown printing a 12th century account of moving St Cuthbert’s coffin. The window includes images of the North East industrial heritage, these include coal mining, ship building and the railways. Also included is the North East’s religious history with St. Cuthbert and St. Bede, Lindisfarne priory is also depicted. To contrast these is glass production, which happened right along the North East coast and also farming. Glass production was a major industry in the North East, there is a Glass Museum located at Sunderland, beside the University. Collectors of Sea Glass come from all over the world to the beaches of the North East coast to collect sea glass. Making jewellery is a very popular use for the collected glass.

This photograph was taken from the part of the Cathedral where the choir stalls are located. A short telephoto lens was used to take this photograph. A few different shots were taken, to get the exposure right, this is to keep detail in the light parts of the stained glass window. It can be tricky getting the exposure correct as there is often a wide contrast range in a window.
