Description
Durham Cathedral The Crossing Mounted Print. Free UK shipping. Vertical mounted print, with a wide angle HDR photograph of the Crossing inside Durham Cathedral. The Crossing sits below the main Cathedral Bell Tower and is the intersection point from walking through the nave, down to the choir stalls. In this photograph, the main lectern is shown on the right side. To the right of this is the DLI Chapel and the entrance to the Bell Tower. There is a small charge for those willing to clime the 325 stairs to the top of the tower, it is well worth it, on the nice day for the fantastic views across the city. With the low view point used in this photograph you can actually see up part of the tower to the viewing level.
In the middle of this photograph is the Rood Screen, behind which are the choir stalls and then the High Altar. The left hand side of the photograph is theย St. Gregory Chapel.
Work to construct this fabulous Norman building, began in 1093 and took about 800 years to complete. It is the shrine and resting place for the remains of St. Cuthbert. The monks of Lindisfarne had spent many years travelling around the North East of England looking for a suitable resting place for this important saint.ย Durham Cathedral and the buildings around palace Green, including Durham Castle in 1986 were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Durham Cathedral has featured in many films and TV shows, including the early Harry Potter movies, Elizabeth and Marvelโs Avengers Endgame. TV shows include ITVโs North East set detective series Inspector George Gentley.
