Durham Cathedral Twilight Card

Durham Cathedral Twilight Card. A DL size, panoramic greeting card, with a twilight photograph of Durham Castle and Cathedral, taken from Wharton Park. The sky is a cool blue colour which contrasts very well against the warm yellow colour of Durham Castle and the Cathedral from the artificial lights illuminating both buildings. This is contrasted against the dark greens and magentas of the trees that provide the base to this photograph. This my favourite viewpoint to photograph the Cathedral and Castle. There is a wide array of views from this location, which has undergone a major renovation of it’s facilities. Different times of the year provide different colours from spring, when the cherry trees are in bloom, to autumn, when the leaves are turning and have fantastic colours. Late afternoons and evenings are the best times of day, to catch the sunlight at Wharton Park. To photograph the Cathedral and Castle, as the sun is at the perfect angle to illuminate this side of the buildings and the trees surrounding them.

This photograph was taken with a medium length, telephoto lens. The camera set setup to capture four vertical frames. They were then ‘stitched’ together in Photoshop to create one complete panoramic picture. This is a technique that we have developed over the last 10 years for our landscape photography. This produces finished photographs with much more detail than os possible with a single image capture. At bit of work was required, just to blend the clouds together, as things moving during the multiple exposures do not always align perfectly. Using the panoramic format, really focuses you in on just the Cathedral and Castle. The contrast between the bright warm yellow of the buildings, against the blue of the sky and the dark base, with the trees, the stonework of the two buildings really stand out.
