Hebburn is located on the South side of the River Tyne, close to Jarrow and Gateshead. Hebburn was a ship building location and like a lot of locations around Newcastle and Gateshead had a coal mine. Hebburn, in Saxon times was a small fishing hamlet located upon the River Tyne. The first record of Hebburn mentions a settlement of fishermen’s huts in the 8th century, which were burned by the Vikings. Hebburn is still the location of a shipyard, operated by A&P Group.
Hebburn Railway Station was opened in 1872 under the North Eastern Railway. Following closure for conversion in the early 1980s, for the opening of the Tyne and Wear Metro, the station was demolished and re-built, with staggered platforms on each side of the bridge on Station Road. The new station opened in 1984.
