Newcastle Quayside at Night Magnet. Free UK shipping. A plastic fridge magnet with a dramatic vertical colour photograph of the Tyne Bridge and the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside taken at night. The sun has set, leaving a dark brown sky, contrasting against the artificial lights. The lights inside the span and along the roadway part of Tyne Bridge really make it standout against the dark sky. Figures on the quayside footpath and road give this photograph a real sense of life and movement. This photograph was taken from the ‘Side’ at the bottom of Dean Street, looking across the River Tyne to the Gateshead side of the River.
The bridge was designed by the engineering firm of Mott, Hay and Anderson They also designed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland. Tyne Bridge is based on their design for the Sydney harbour Bridge. Construction on the bridge started in 1925 and opened in 1928. Tyne Bridge has become the defining symbol of Tyneside.
The four towers, surrounding the bridge, were designed as warehouses with five storeys. But, the inner floors of the warehouses in the bridge’s towers were not completed and, as a result, the storage areas were never used. Lifts for passengers and goods were built in the towers to provide access to the Quayside however they are no longer in use.
Text on the magnet reads ‘Newcastle’.
