Newcastle Quayside Sunset Magnet

Newcastle Quayside Sunset Magnet. Plastic fridge magnet with a photographic print inside. This magnet has a sunset photograph looking along the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside to the iconic buildings and bridges crossing the River Tyne. In this photograph you can see the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Sage Gateshead music and concert venue and the Tyne Bridge. There is still some warmth in the sky in this photograph, although the buildings and bridges have quite a cool blue tone to them. There is still a nice warm orange glow behind both the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and Tyne Bridge from the setting sun. This photograph of the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside was one of the first ‘stitch’ panoramic photographs taken and is still a popular picture.

I was stood beside some new apartments overlooking the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside in 2009 to take this photograph. While most of this view is unchanged, the big part that has, are the maritime bollards underneath the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. These were removed in 2012 when it was found that the amount of river boat traffic was far less than when the bridge was constructed and there was no further need for the bollards. They were meant as a safety feature to prevent ships from colliding into the sides of the bridge and causing damage to the tilting mechanism. Constructed from steel, after 12 years in the River Tyne, they were starting to rust quite badly and have always been considered to be a blot on the landscape, when photographing the bridge.

Newcastle Quayside Sunset Magnet, the size of the magnet is 76x50mm. The magnet has a pullout stand which clips into a slot in the back, so that it can stand up.
