Snow Globe Tornado at Newcastle. Free UK Shipping. This snow globe has a photograph of the A1 class ‘Tornado‘ steam locomotive. This locomotive is the first of a new breed of modern built steam locomotives, to designs that did not manage to get preserved after the move to modern diesel and electric power was introduced. This locomotive design was created by Arthur H. Peppercorn.The original 49 ‘Peppercorn’ Class A1s were ordered by the LNER and built at Doncaster and Darlington for British Railways (BR) in 1948/9, after the nationalisation of the railways after the end of the 2nd World War. These locomotives were in service for only 15 years before they were scrapped. These locomotives, while similar to earlier ‘Gresley’ designs like the Flying Scotsman, benefited from Peppercorn re-designing earlier locomotives and incorporating the latest design and construction techniques into the engines.

This photograph of ‘Tornado’ was taken, as it arrives at Newcastle Railway Station, early in the morning, in December 2019. The locomotive was hauling a Rail Touring Company charter, from York to Edinburgh. It was a dull morning when Tornado arrived, it was a bit challenging to get a good quality photograph under these conditions.

The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust’s locomotive ‘Tornado’, can be seen operating on both preserved railways and the Main Line. It took the trust 19 years to fundraise, design and build the engine. Their next project, the LNER P2 class locomotive ‘Prince of Wales’ based on a design by Sir Nigel Gresley, is well under way and is due to be completed within the next year.
