Durham Cathedral St Cuthberts Shrine Greeting Card. A5 greeting card, with an HDR photograph of St. Cuthberts Shrine. The Shrine is located behind the High Altar screen and just before the Rose Window and the Chapel of Nine Altars. The modern simplicity of St Cuthbert’s shrine today, belies its original appearance, which was ornate.  It is said that just one of the many jewels decorating the shrine would have been worth a king’s ransom. Hanging above the shrine is the modern tester of the shrine of St Cuthbert, and is one of the few indicators of what the shrine would have looked like before the mid-sixteenth century when it was stripped of all its riches.

The base of the shrine was made of expensive green marble and gilded. In the base were four seats, where pilgrims, especially the sick and lame, could kneel to receive the blessings of God and St Cuthbert. The shrine is accessed by a climbing up a few stone steps, there is access from either side of the shrine. This location also provides the best view in the Cathedral of the Transfiguration stained glass window. In this photograph the Transfiguration window is behind me, just visible to the right side of the photograph is part of the Rose Window.

The Cathedral have featured in a number of films including the early Harry Potter films.
