The Shrine is located behind the High Altar screen and just before the Rose Window and the Chapel of Nine Altars. The modern simplicity of St Cuthbert’s shrine today, belies its original appearance, which was ornate.  It is said that just one of the many jewels decorating the shrine would have been worth a king’s ransom. Hanging above the shrine is the modern tester of the shrine of St Cuthbert, and is one of the few indicators of what the shrine would have looked like before the mid-sixteenth century when it was stripped of all its riches.

Work to construct this fabulous Norman building, began in 1093 and took about 800 years to complete. It is the shrine and resting place for the remains of St. Cuthbert. The monks of Lindisfarne had spent many years travelling around the North East of England looking for a suitable resting place for this important saint. Durham Cathedral and the buildings around palace Green, including Durham Castle in 1986 were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Durham Cathedral has featured in many films and TV shows, including the early Harry Potter movies, Elizabeth and Marvel’s Avengers Endgame. TV shows include ITV’s North East set detective series Inspector George Gentley.
