Durham Cathedral The Millennium Window Mounted Print. Free UK shipping. Vertical mounted print, with a photograph of the Millennium Window. This modern window in Durham Cathedral was completed in 1995,ย it is located in the South Quire aisle to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of St Cuthbertโ€™s Shrine arriving at Durham. The stained glass windowย combines Holy Island and St Cuthbert with the modern world. For example a university computer is shown printing a 12th century account of moving St Cuthbertโ€™s coffin. The window includes images of the North East industrial heritage, these include coal mining, ship building and the railways. Also included is the North Eastโ€™s religious history with St. Cuthbert and St. Bede, Lindisfarne priory is also depicted. To contrast these is glass production, which happened right along the North East coast and also farming. Glass production was a major industry in the North East, there is a Glass Museum located at Sunderland, beside the University. Collectors of Sea Glass come from all over the world to the beaches of the North East coast to collect sea glass. Making jewellery is a very popular use for the collected glass.

This photograph was taken from the part of the Cathedral where the choir stalls are located. A short telephoto lens was used to take this photograph. A few different shots were taken, to get the exposure right, this is to keep detail in the light parts of the stained glass window. It can be tricky getting the exposure correct as there is often a wide contrast range in a window.

Work to construct this fabulous Norman building, began in 1093 and took about 800 years to complete. It is the shrine and resting place for the remains of St. Cuthbert. The monks of Lindisfarne had spent many years travelling around the North East of England looking for a suitable resting place for this important saint.ย Durham Cathedral and the buildings around palace Green, including Durham Castle in 1986 were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Durham Cathedral has featured in many films and TV shows, including the early Harry Potter movies, Elizabeth and Marvelโ€™s Avengers Endgame. TV shows include ITVโ€™s North East set detective series Inspector George Gentley.
