Fridge Magnet Azuma Virgin Trains. Plastic fridge magnet with a photograph of a Virgin Trains Azuma Train unit, photographed at Newcastle Central Station. This photograph was taken in January 2018 when Virgin Trains had started operating test units of their prototype Azuma trains on the East Coast Main Line. I had just closed up at our Gift Kiosk in the station when this train unit came in. After a quick dash over the footbridge then down onto platform 3 to see this train. This was the first time I had seen an Azuma unit stop in the station, I has seen a few trains go straight through, hading North and South. This is a landscape photograph, which compares to the vertical photograph that is used inside our Azuma Virgin Trains Keyring.
Virgin Trains no longer operate the East Coast Main Line route from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh, they were replaced by LNER, who brought the Azuma train unto full service. These trains have replaced both the 125 HST units and class 91 electric trains. The Azuma train is designed and built by Hitatchi. With the components manufactured in Japan and assembled here in the UK. The trains ability to switch from electric to diesel power, allows it to operate on a much wider part of the rail network than the locomotives that it has replaced.
This photograph of the Azuma train in Virgin Trains livery is now something that we will not see again.
