Gateshead Railway Station was opened by the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway on 18 June 1844. The station was located at the close to the end of the High Level Bridge on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne.
The Team Valley Line from Gateshead to Durham via Chester-le-Street opened to passengers on 1 December 1868, and on that day, a second pair of platforms at Gateshead opened to serve that line; these were known as Gateshead West, and the original pair became Gateshead East. Gateshead West Station closed in 1965. Gateshead East station finally closed in 1981, a new underground station was constructed close by, to serve the new Tyne and Wear Metro line. This underground station is Gateshead Interchange, with connecting bus services located above it.
