Jarrow Railway Station is now part of the Tyne and Wear Metro passenger transport system. It is located on the south banks of the River Tyne and was a location for both ship building and coal mining. Jarrow is also located right beside the southern entrance to the Tyne Tunnel.

In the eighth century, the monastery of Saint Paul in Jarrow was the home of Bede.

In the 20th century, Jarrow was famous as the starting point of the Jarrow March against unemployment back in 1936.
