Greeting Card Scotsman and Azuma

Greeting Card Scotsman and Azuma. A5 size Greeting Card with a photograph of the world famous ‘Flying Scotsman’ steam locomotive at Newcastle Central Station. To the left of Flying Scotsman is a new LNER ‘Azuma’ train service and to the righthand side is an LNER class 91 “Electra” train service. In one photograph you can see generations of East Coast Main Line express locomotives! This photograph was taken at Newcastle Central Railway Station in 2019. ‘Flying Scotsman’ and behind it is ‘Mayflower’ a Thompson designed LNER B1 class locomotive. They are hauling a charter service up to Edinburgh. The ‘Mayfower’ locomotive, was booked to operate a tour around Scotland, beginning a few days later.

This locomotive was named after The Flying Scotsman, train service which was LNER’s express, non-stop service operating between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh station. The locomotive was the first to be recorded at reaching 100mph in 1934. Flying Scotsman, then set a record for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive when it ran 422 miles (679 km) on 8 August 1989 while in Australia on tour.

Flying Scotsman started operating with the LNER as an A1 class pacific locomotive, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley in 1923. It was later rebuilt as an updated A3 class design in 1947. It first carried the number 4472, then when British Railways were formed, it was re-numbered 10603, in 1948. It is this number and the British Railways green paint work that is shown in this photograph.

Flying Scotsman is now based at the National Railway Museum at York. It can be seen regularly operating on various preserved railways as well as the Main Line, hauling different rail tours.
