Mallard 4468 Metal Wall Sign. The Original Metal Wall Sign Co, The Mallard 4468, the famous steam locomotive. Metal Wall Sign from an original L.N.E.R. steam locomotive promotional poster produced in the late 1930’s. These steam locomotive posters were produced to promote the advantage of travelling by L.N.E.R. on the East Coast Mainline, between London Kings Cross, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh. In this poster, the Mallard steam locomotive is shown departing from London’s King’s Cross station. The locomotive is painted in LNER’s blue express colour with matching, streamlined carriages painted in blue and white. The first streamlined carriages operated as part of the LNER’s ‘Silver Jubilee’ trains, which started on 30th September 1935. Both the team locomotives and the carriages were painted silver. The train was made in the year of King George V‘s Silver Jubilee, and was painted silver throughout. It was composed of two twin-set articulated coaches, and one triplet-set; seven coaches in all. The service ran until the start of the Second World War in 1939.

In this poster the locomotive portrayed is the World’s fastest steam locomotive, the LNER A4 class ‘Mallard‘ locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built at Doncaster works in 1938. On the 3rd of July 1938 the locomotive achieved the speed of 126 mph, this beat the previous record by a German steam locomotive of 124 mph. No other steam locomotive has achieved a faster recorded speed.

The Mallard is one of six LNER A4 class steam locomotives that have been preserved and is part of the National collection on display at York Railway Museum.
