Durham Cathedral Panoramic Card. A DL size, panoramic greeting card, with a nighttime photograph of Durham Cathedral, which was taken standing on Palace Green. The sky is a deep, saturated blue colour, this is from using a long exposure. This photograph was taken as a ‘stitch panoramic’ image. Multiple, vertical photographs are taken, panning across the scene. These individual photographs are then merged together in Photoshop to create one complete picture. The end result is a photograph with much more detail, than if just a single photograph was taken and that image was cropped to a panoramic shape. The bright yellow, artificial lights illuminating Durham Cathedral contrast well against the deep blue of the sky. The buildings on the left hand side of the Cathedral, are nice and dark.

The Palace Green Library building is on the right hand side of the photograph, it is illuminated by some warm orange light, coming from the street lights around Palace Green. The library is a part of Durham University. It is open to the public and hosts a range of exhibitions throughout the year and has a popular cafe. Durham Cathedral and the buildings around palace Green, including Durham Castle form the UNESCO World Heritage site. The angle of the sun, really brings out the amazing stonework of the Cathedral. It is a major ongoing effort by the Cathedral’s stonemasons to maintain and preserve this magnificent and important building for the generations to come.

Work to construct this fabulous Norman building, began in 1093 and took about 800 years to complete. It is the shrine and resting place for the remains of St. Cuthbert. The monks of Lindisfarne had spent many years travelling around the North East looking for a suitable resting place for this important saint.

Durham Cathedral has featured in many films and TV shows, including the early Harry Potter movies and Marvel’s Avengers Endgame.
