Durham Bridge View Card. A5 greeting card, with a photograph of Elvet Bridge with Durham Castle above on the skyline. Elvet Bridge is packed with people marching with their local pit banners as part of the Durham Miners’ Gala, held in the city every year. 2021 is the 150th anniversary of the Gala in Durham. Referred to locally as ‘The Big Meeting’ people from all of Durham’s traditional coal mining villages march (or are bused) to various starting points on the outskirts of the city. From where they will march first to the Market Place, then across Elvet Bridge, they will then stop outside the County Hotel where the union leaders, invited guests and local dignitaries greet the march from the hotel balcony and the bands pause to play their “party piece” before marching the short distance to the Racecourse where there is a platform for the speakers. The Racecourse area, beside the river Wear is always busy once the banners start arriving. With food, drink and activities for all the family, it is a party area all afternoon. After the speeches on the racecourse, four or five selected bands and banners march to the Cathedral for the Miners’ Service. These are often new or restored banners, which will be dedicated in the Cathedral. Whether you are a believer or not, this is worth a visit for the sheer dramatic experience.

Behind the marchers on the bridge are the designer shops and cafes. On the riverbank, to the right of Elvet Bridge is Brown’s boathouse and it is busy with couples wanting to head out in a rowing boat, out onto the River Wear on this lovely, warm summers day. A couple of rowing boats can be seen in the River Wear. The righthand side of this photograph is dominated by the Prince Bishops shopping area, containing both independent shops and national retailers.
